Tonya Ewers joined the Gill Foundation in March 2010 as the communications manager for the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado. Tonya’s work centers around strategic external communications that serve to promote equality in Colorado, specifically for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Tonya is also responsible for the fund’s annual Community Impact Report and the launch and management of the fund’s social media tools including Facebook and Twitter.
Prior to joining the Gay & Lesbian Fund, Tonya was the senior news media specialist for the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado, and downtown Denver campus. Her work at the medical campus helped catapult local collaborative research efforts into the public eye when Lance Armstrong brought his “Tour of Hope” to the campus in 2004. The day also marked the grand opening of the new cancer research tower for the University of Colorado Cancer Center. In the year following the event, the number of placed media hits and articles around research on the campus grew by more than 400 percent.
Tonya also previously worked as the national public relations manager for Children’s World Learning Centers. In that role, she facilitated a multi-disciplinary collaboration between various departments that streamlined crisis communications for the organization, and created public relations toolkits for the more than 600 centers nationwide.
Her earlier PR experience included work in the tourism industry with clients like the Colorado Tourism Office and Aspen Chamber Resort Association, as well as nonprofit work with Colorado’s Ocean Journey and Colorado Proud.
Tonya holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Economics from Ripon College, a small, private liberal arts institution in Wisconsin.
In her free time, Tonya loves to meet inspiring people while exploring and traveling to new places. She is always on the hunt for ordinary people with extraordinary stories.
