Message from Tim Gill

When Tim Gill created the Gill Foundation in 1994, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell had just gone into effect, support for marriage equality stood at 25 percent, and Colorado was in the midst of a court battle to determine whether gay people could be protected under the law at all. Change sometimes takes longer than we would hope. But in 2010, after 17 years, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was finally repealed. And support for marriage passed 50 percent for the first time. Despite assets remaining flat, the Gill Foundation increased our funding in 2010 because now is a time of great opportunity. The American people are recognizing that equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is a matter of human rights. And treating LGBT people unfairly is simply un-American. The Gill Foundation’s mission is equal opportunity for all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender expression. And we cannot stop until everyone’s rights are respected equally, everywhere.
